Directions: The class will divide you into four groups. Each group will be assigned a different poem. Fill out this handout and then create a poster analyzing your poem that addresses each of the following issues:
A. Mood/Tone: study the choice of words the poet used. Make five points about how the tone of the poem relates to the mood in Into the Wild.
B. How does Krakauer use some of the same poetic elements in his writing that the poet did (rhyme, rhythm, onomatopoeia, repetition, alliteration, assonance and parallelism)? Find five similarities.
C. Show five examples of imagery and figures of speech in the poem and in the book. Look for: similes, metaphors, sensory imagery and personification.
D. Compare the theme of the poem with that of Into the Wild. Write each in sentence form and then explain how they compare and/or contrast in regard to their messages. Be specific.

2) Sequence of Teaching Grammar and Writing - Step 24 Continued
3) In Class: Either: Read and/or work on Study Guide - Alas, Babylon – Chapters 1 – 4, or work on 100 Words (Bring one essential item to work on) - You will be require to work on any of the above three items. If you take the position that I’ve done all that work, and I’m just going to sit and talk and keep others from achieving the success I enjoy—forget it. You will have to bring proof in the form of your completed work. If you do so, you can go ahead in the reading, or you can do homework for another class. If you don’t bring the proof, I will give you an additional assignment related to Alas, Babylon and you will have to bring it on the day of the quiz for Chapters 1 – 4 or lose ten points off your quiz.
